Gaming sector Contributes to Government Revenue as Oversight is Strengthened to Protect Society
Dodoma
The Government has continued to emphasize the importance of strengthening oversight of the gaming sector to ensure compliance with the law and protection of public interests.
This was highlighted during a seminar organized by Gaming Board of Tanzania (GBT) for the Dodoma Regional Security Committee, held on April 23, 2026, at the Regional Commissioner’s Office, Mkapa Building.
Speaking during the seminar, the Dodoma Regional Administrative Secretary, Dr. Khatibu Kazungu, stated that the gaming sector is a source of government revenue, underscoring the need for close supervision to ensure compliance with national laws, including the minimum participation age of 18 years.
On his part, the Director General of GBT, James Mbalwe, noted that the sector significantly contributes to Tanzania’s economy, collecting approximately TZS 260 billion in taxes in 2025.
Additionally, the Director of Corporate Services at GBT, Daniel Ole Sumayan, in his presentation explained that the Board is responsible for regulating and coordinating gaming activities, including licensing, operator inspections, and ensuring compliance with integrity and legal requirements, as well as advising the Government on revenue collection.
Meanwhile, the Dodoma District Commissioner, Jabir Shekimweri, emphasized the importance of public education to address gambling addiction, noting that gaming should be regarded as entertainment rather than a source of employment or income.
Gaming Board of Tanzania is a public institution established under the Gaming Act of 2003, mandated to regulate and coordinate gaming activities in Tanzania.
